Apple, Sultana & Cinnamon Porridge

The last few months in Melbourne have been absolutely freezing. Well, for Melbourne standards at least. So, as you can imagine, I've been clutching at ways to get warm, and I've come accustom to starting my mornings with a warm bowl of porridge.

I've never much been a fan of porridge. I think I was doing it wrong. I always found it bland, tasteless and needing too much sugar to make it worth eating. That was until I thought of using the natural sweetness of fruit to make it tasty.

So here's my recipe for the ultimate winter breakfast.

Apple, sultana & cinnamon porridge


1 cup rolled oats 1 cup milk of your choice 2 tsp cinnamon 2 tsp maple syrup pinch of salt 1 tbs sultanas 1 apple, sliced

To serve: 2 tbs greek yoghurt 1 tsp maple syrup


Slice the apple into thin chunks – they should be able the size of your thumbnail.

In a saucepan drop in the rolled oats, milk, cinnamon, maple syrup and salt and stir until combined. Let it come to the boil and mix again.

Add in sultanas and apple, stir again. If you love cinnamon as much as me, add in another 1/2 tsp with the apples. Keep stirring and let cook for another 30 seconds.

Serve with a dollop of greek yoghurt and a drizzle of maple syrup.
