The Only Travel Destination You Need to Visit in 2017

With this new year well and truly upon us, by now we've all read our fair share of these so called 'hottest travel destinations of 2017' lists. But there's one destination these big wanderlust-inducing lists are actually forgetting.

This mystery destination is better than anything you can imagine. And it's easier to achieve than you think. In fact, it's right in your grasp, all you need to do is plan for it.

So, where is this magical mystery destination?

Well, it's your hometown.

I get it, it's a little difficult to picture your country or hometown as an exciting and bucket list worthy travel destination, but it's the only place in the world that's right at your feet. No plane, bus, train or horse and cart is needed, just a change in perspective.

So if you're craving a bit of adventure in the new year, maybe it's about time you get off your butt and spent your weekends treating your hometown as the hot new travel destination. Because I bet there are a handful of exciting things you've never done in your hometown. I know I have quite a few to tick off.

To get you thinking about your hometown in a new and romantic light, here are a few things you can do.

1. Get the skyline view. Most major cities have a skyline view, you just need to know where to get it. A quick Google search should find you an observation deck, rooftop bar (complete with drinks, hell yeah) or park with a view.

2. Spend the day at the zoo, amusement park or museum. Your local government tourism website should have most of this kind of information waiting for you. It's totally not weird to check your hometown's tourism site!

3. Drive somewhere new. Sometimes you just need to escape the city and get into nature. There are bound to be plenty of state parks, hikes, camping grounds and heritage outside of the city. You just need to get in the car and drive. Maybe check in with your local government parks website along the way.

4. Spend the day walking the CBD like a tourist. Start the day with breakfast at a cafe you've never been to before, then get lost in the city and remember to look up.

5. Get a little silly at a winery, brewery or distillery. Maybe consider booking a nights accommodation close by so you don't need to think about driving home. And remember to eat lots of cheese.

6. Something you've always wanted to see, do or try...

Now it's up to you. It's about freaking time we started looking at our hometowns as a new and exciting city just waiting to be explored. So get out a pen and some paper, and start researching.

Tell me, where's your hometown and how would you spend a day as a tourist? Or what would you recommend to a tourist?
